@FDAanimalhealth

  • In recent months, there have been multiple pet food recalls due to potentially toxic levels of vitamin D in dog food.
  • In November 2018, 9 brands of dry dog food were recalled https://go.usa.gov/xENUa
  • In January 2019, >20 varieties of Hill’s Science Diet & Prescription Diet canned (not dry) dog food were recalled https://go.usa.gov/xENUK
  • Pet owners should STOP FEEDING these recalled products immediately & contact a vet if their dog shows symptoms of vitamin D toxicity.
  • FDA is working with manufacturers to investigate the issue & make sure corrective steps are taken.
  • Contact your vet if your dog shows symptoms such as: vomiting, ↓appetite, ↑thirst, ↑urination, excessive drooling, weight loss. These may be signs of vitamin D toxicity, which can lead to kidney failure & death.
  • If a vet determines that your dog has vit. D toxicity & suspects it’s related to dog food, report it to FDA. Here’s how: https://go.usa.gov/xENH5  Be sure to include brand, lot #, best by date.
  • When reporting a pet food-related issue to FDA, please be sure to include as much detail as possible – especially the LOT NUMBER & BEST BY DATE from the packaging https://go.usa.gov/xENH5 . This critical info can help us save lives!
  • Tip: When you purchase new pet food, use your phone to snap a photo of the lot number and best by date – just in case.
