JOETTA LYNN DEFRANCESCO OF THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND CONSUMER SERVICES RECEIVES THE ASSOCIATION OF FOOD & DRUG OFFICIALS (AFDO) ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Providence, Rhode Island, June 5, 2012 – Joetta Lynn DeFrancesco, Senior Sanitation & Safety Specialist with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Bonita Springs, FL was awarded the AFDO Achievement Award at the 116th AFDO Annual Educational Conference on June 5, 2012.
The AFDO Achievement Award is given for one or more specific achievements or for a documented, sustained, high level performance. To be eligible for the award, one must be in his or her first five years of service as a sanitarian, inspector, investigator, milk specialist, food specialist, radiological health inspector, consumer product safety inspector, laboratory analyst, or similar regulatory position. He or she must be a field person; that is, one who goes out of the office to make inspections a significant portion of the time. The recipient may not be a supervisor unless the work for which he or she was nominated was done as a field person and it played a role in the promotion to supervisor. The recipient must be employed by a federal, state, county, or municipal regulatory agency, which has at least one employee as a member of AFDO.
Joetta displayed willingness and true professionalism by stepping forward, after only one year of experience, and training two recently hired employees. During the training process she applied for a vacant position and was promoted to Senior Sanitation & Safety Specialist. Since her promotion, she has successfully trained two additional inspectors and is currently training a third that will be responsible for collecting seafood samples from firms that receive their products from the Gulf of Mexico.
Joseph Corby, Executive Director stated, “This is a very special award as it honors a young field level official who we believe will become a future food safety leader that can carry on the traditions that AFDO represents with consumer protection.”
The Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO), established in 1896, successfully fosters uniformity in the adoption and enforcement of science-based food, drug, medical devices, cosmetics and product safety laws, rules, and regulations. AFDO and its six Regional Affiliates provide the mechanism and the forum where regional, national and international issues are deliberated and resolved to uniformly provide the best public health and consumer protection in the most expeditious and cost effective manner.
