Strategic Plan - Goal #8
 

Goal 8:

Increase the visibility and effectiveness of AFDO efforts to foster regulatory uniformity through cooperation.


Action Steps:
Action steps describe the steps we will take to achieve our goals and implement AFDO’s strategic plan.  The action steps are tied to goals and say specifically what has been done.

 

Issue:

Uniformity - How will AFDO more effectively foster uniformity in the regulation of foods, drugs, devices, and consumer products?

 

Actions Completed in 2003:

¨      Developed a PowerPoint presentation about preemptive national uniformity legislation that can be utilized by AFDO when making presentations about national uniformity.

 

¨       Presented AFDO’s concerns about preemptive national uniformity legislation to the Food Safety Committee of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture.

 

¨       Delivered several workshops and symposia to promote awareness, education and uniformity (See the section titled “Training”)

 

¨       Continued to appoint AFDO Liaisons to other key organizations that have objectives similar to those of AFDO.  Following are the AFDO Liaisons to other such organizations:

 

Ø       American Association of Feed Control Officials – Joe Corby

Ø       AOAC Analytical Laboratory Accreditation Criteria Committee – Gayle Lancette

Ø       AOAC International – Gayle Lancette

Ø       Association of Public Health Laboratories – Bill Krueger

Ø       Institute of Food Technologists – Bill Krueger

Ø       National Association of State Departments of Agriculture – Denis Blank

Ø       Codex Committee on Food Hygiene – Dan Sowards

Ø       FDA Food Advisory Committee – Marion Aller

Ø       Federal/State Relations Field Committee – Joe Corby

Ø       National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods – Jeff Farrar

Ø       Conference for Food Protection – John Lattimore

Ø       Partnership for Food Safety Education – Cynthia Legette

Ø       USDA National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection – Mike Govro

Ø       Association of State and Territorial Health Officers – Guy Delius

Ø       National Seafood Safety HACCP Alliance – Chris Wogee

 

¨       Continued the work of the National Uniformity Workgroup comprised of AFDO Associate and Regular (regulatory) members.  The goals of this workgroup are to:

 

-       More clearly define concerns of AFDO’s state regulatory members with National Uniformity for Food legislation reintroduced during the 107th Congress.

-       Develop a list of proposed changes that would make future similar legislation more mutually acceptable or

-       Explore other potential avenues to more effectively and collaboratively address short and long-range uniformity concerns.

 

¨       Continued to monitor uniformity legislation.
