Strategic Plan - Goal #4

Goal 4:
Develop ways to assure adequate, continuous funding necessary for AFDO to aggressively pursue its vision.

Action Steps:
Action steps describe the steps we will take to achieve our goals and implement AFDO’s strategic plan.  The action steps are tied to goals and say specifically what has been done.

Issue:
Funding - How will AFDO assure adequate funding on an ongoing basis?

Actions Completed in 2003:

¨       Renewed the following contracts with federal agencies.  These contracts generate revenue for AFDO and provide the contracting agency with requested information, data, or service.  Contracts in progress are:

Ø       States Helping States – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Ø       FDA – tracking and reporting the nationwide adoption of the FDA Food Code by State, Local and Tribal government agencies.

Ø       USDA/FSIS – providing train-the-trainer courses to each Regional Affiliate association on Retail Meat and Poultry Processing.

Ø       USDA/FSIS – developing model guidelines and proposing training programs for State oversight of custom exempt slaughter operations.

Ø       USDA/CSREES – identifying training needs and developing training for state and local food safety agencies, and developing advisories and variances, related to high-risk food-processing activities in the retail environment.

¨       Completed the application of a negotiated indirect cost rate for all grant budgets, enabling AFDO to recoup operational overhead costs associated with administering each grant.  Indirect cost rate proposal was approved.

¨       Developed and delivered a series of training programs, which included food allergen issues, meat and poultry processing at retail, and cGMP’s for the Pharmaceutical Industry.

¨       The AFDO Endowment Foundation:

Ø       Continued to successfully promote increased donor participation.

-        2002/2003 Chair of the Associate Committee committed to an increased level of promotion/awareness of the Endowment Foundation to all AFDO members.

-        The President made presentations at each Regional Affiliate association meeting stressing the importance of a fully funded Endowment Foundation and encouraging all AFDO members to become contributors to the Foundation.

-        Sent a letter to all AFDO members prior to the end of the calendar year to encourage year-end contributions.

-        Began development of an informational brochure to promote the Foundation and its’ objectives.  The brochure will be used to assist in fundraising endeavors.
