Inaugural Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Standards (MFRPS) Meeting Held

Kansas City, Missouri - March 27-29, 2012

The Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are pleased to announce completion of the first inaugural Manufactured Foods Regulatory Program Standards (MFRPS) Training Course, which was held March 27 - 29, 2012 in Kansas City, MO. 

Funded by the FDA under the Alliance for Advancing a National Integrated Food Safety System Cooperative Agreement, this special training course was designed to provide State food safety program managers and FDA food safety officials with information critical to advancing the MFRPS and a national integrated food safety system - essential components mandated by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The course also provided an opportunity for Federal and State participants to discuss pertinent food safety issues related to manufactured foods and consisted of presentations, roundtable discussions, and exercises that focused on promoting interaction, collaboration, continuous program improvement, and innovation. 

The training course was historical, in a sense, as it marked the official formation of the Manufactured Food Regulatory Program (MFRP) Alliance that is comprised of State food safety program managers. The Alliance is expected to significantly influence and strengthen the working relationship that the States have with FDA. Its goals are to facilitate long-term improvements to the national food safety system by strengthening Federal-State collaboration, provide resources to support State's manufactured foods programs, and advance the concepts for integrating the national food safety system. It will also provide a forum for State officials to discuss issues involving Federal-State relations. 

Through the MFRP Alliance, AFDO intends to build a "community" for State food safety program managers who serve as the primary oversight officials for regulating manufactured foods in their States. During the training course, AFDO representatives identified a number of MFRP Alliance resources that will be available to these food safety program officials including a State Food Safety Program Manager Information Portal, Directory of State and Local Officials, Topical Index of Regulatory Guidance, and Registry of Subject Matter Experts.
